Holmes comet expansion
This image illustrates the expansion of Holmes comet during 5 days. The image is a
composition of the
image made on December 3 (21:33 - 22:03 UT, left comet position)
and the
image made on December 8 (23:08 - 23:31 UT, right position).
During that interval the comet distance from the Earth increased of about 2.1 percent (from 1.710 AU to
1.746 AU). Therefore the spatial expansion of the comet is a little bit bigger than the image shows.
The faintest recorded stars are weaker then 17th magnitude. The open cluster NGC 1245 is visible in the lower
part of the image.
