Baily's beads 5 seconds before C2 and iridescent clouds

Mixed feelings are associated with this image. Beautiful iridescent clouds lit by the last Baily's beads before the second contact created impressive and dramatic scenery. On the other hand in this moment it was obvious that these clouds obscured at least partially the solar corona and that twelve seconds of totality gave no chance for any improvement.

This HDR image processing had to manage the brightness ratio more than 1:107. Four digital images and one classical negative film image taken within one second were used for the brightest part of the image. The lower light intensity the more images were used. Total number of used images is 54. The color negative film was used because images taken on this film have no saturated part, unlike digital camera images. That is why the use of color negative film improves the display of Baily's beads. This strategy led to very realistic image. The only "drawback" or let me say "imperfection" is that the lower intensity clouds are a little motion-blurred because the images are aligned on solar corona. Fortunately the blurring of clouds is nearly imperceptible in the resulting image.

ProcessingComposition of 54 eclipse images - 25 images (1), 22 images (2), 6 images (3), 1 image (4). Digital eclipse images were calibrated by means of large number of dark frames and flat-fields, aligned by means of phase correlation, composed by means of LDIC 5.0 software, processed using Corona 4.1 in order to visualize coronal structures. Final processing was done using ACC 6.1 software.
