Fe XIV emission image

This image shows Fe XIV emission, which visualizes hot areas in the solar corona with temperature about 1.8 MK. The resulting image was made from two sets of images taken with two Canon EOS 5D cameras. The first one (on-line camera) was equipped with a narrow-band filter with center wavelength 530.2 nm and bandwidth 0.15 nm. The second camera (off-line camera) was equipped with a narrow-band filter of the same bandwidth and center wavelength 529.1 nm. Both used filters were stabilized at temperature of 45.0°C. After precise calibration, the images taken with the off-line camera were subtracted from images taken with the on-line camera in order to remove the continuum radiation. Therefore the resulting image contains Fe XIV radiation only. The image is presented in the color which corresponds for human vision with 530 nm. See the following pages for more information about our green line experiment.

Processing12 on-line and 12 off-line images were used. Eclipse images were calibrated by means of dark frames and flat-fields, aligned by means of phase correlation, off-line images were subtracted from on-line images then composed by means of LDIC 5.0 software, processed using Corona 4.1 in order to visualize coronal structures. Final processing was done using ACC 6.1 software.
