Narrow band images in 7 emission lines

Unprecedented simultaneous multi-wavelength coronal observations in seven emission lines, and white light, are presented on this page. The main goal was to observe coronal emission of all possible Fe ions, in the visible wavelength range, from Fe IX to Fe XV. These lines provide an excellent diagnostic tool for probing the physics of the solar corona. Only two Fe ions in this sequence of Fe ionization states were not observed. The first one was Fe XII which has no suitable emission line in the visible or near infrared wavelength range. The second one was Fe XV. Although Fe XV has a strong emission line at 706.0 nm, its observation is problematic because of the presence of a very strong helium line at 706.5 nm. Therefore we observed Ni XV instead, since it has relatively similar diagnostic capabilities as Fe XV. In addition to the six Fe and Ni ions emission lines, an attempt was made to detect emission from neutral hydrogen (H-alpha) in the extended corona.
