Images presented on this page were created from digital images taken by Fred Espenak aboard Galapagos Legend ship in the Pacific Ocean. The observing conditions were much better compared with observing conditions on the Discovery ship and therefore the resulting images are of significantly better contrast. The most complicated step in the image processing was precise images alignment. The ship rocking caused that particular images were rotated mutually of more than 15°. The phase correlation technique using the Fourier transform enabled to determine rotation angles with precision better than 0.05° and to preserve the sharpness of the original images.

The time delay of approximately 84 minutes between the images taken from the Discovery ship and the Galapagos Legend ship enables to study changes in the solar corona.
